Men's Cross Country: Ashford named statewide Coach of the Year again
December 22, 2008

After San Bernardino Valley College won their third men's cross country state championship in a row, one more award was bestowed upon San Bernardino. Men’s Cross Country head coach Wes Ashford was named Coach of the Year for the state of California for the second time in as many years.

On Dec. 13 at the CCCCCTFCA Hall of Fame Banquet in Las Vegas, NV at the Tuscany Hotel, Ashford was handed the award.

Coach Ashford commented, "Every year is different because you have a new group of kids, the second year our team had a big group of returning runners, the first year had fewer than the year before but we made a go of it. Seeing the kids improve is the biggest joy for me." All of his runners will be involved in Track and Field this Spring.

Coach Ashford continued, "The secret to our success is not just one thing, the kids enjoyment of hard work is one, the urge to run is another, they want to train, they want to win. Every year we win, the target on our backs gets larger and that kind of motivation is something that drives some of our runners."

"Having a great supporting cast around this team is necessary to success, (assistant coach) Ron Davis, in addition to our full time faculty (Track and Field head coach) Mike Powell and (Women's Cross Country head coach) Ken Blumenthal. They help with class issues, school related issues, and some personal problems that every college student has. Since I am not full time faculty, they are there when I cannot be, and their help is invaluable."

"I think what draws runners to SBVC is an overall good atmosphere, where kids can be out here and get better, that championship attitude of wanting to be the best is another key to success, in addition to having coachable kids." Coach Ashford concluded with, "I break down the successful formulas of running down to make it as simple as possible," that, among other things, is what makes SBVC a back-to-back-to-back state champion.

Coach Ashford took over the Men’s program in 2003 from Ken Blumenthal who moved on to coach the women’s cross country team.

Men’s cross country has won 18 conference titles including the last 13 in a row starting in 1996.

On November 22nd, the San Bernardino Valley College men’s cross country team won their third straight state title, dominating the competition at Woodward Park in Fresno. Sophomore Carlos Perez (Barstow) was the top finisher for SBVC, smashing a school record he tied in 2007 (20:34) with a course finish time of 20:19.05 placing him third among all finishers. Those winning their second consecutive state title are sophomore runners Perez, Manuel Bueno (Rancho Cucamonga) (21st 20:59.26), Matthew Sartori (Redlands East Valley) (5th 20:23.85), Ronell El-Amin (San Bernardino H.S.) Baseball Team Makes College Pitch To Little Leaguers
November 20, 2008

On Thursday afternoon, November 20, nearly a dozen Del Rosa Little League baseball players came to the newly-refurbished baseball field at San Bernardino Valley College for a mini skills clinic that served as much more than an exercise in fine-tuning their throwing and batting skills as little leaguers “buddied up” with SBVC student athletes for the afternoon before taking in a SBVC Fall league game against Glendale College.

“When we’ve had events like this in the past, several of our SBVC players realized how much the have to offer and have pursued coaching in their own lives,” SBVC Baseball Coach Bill Mierzwik said. “Our goal is to win games, but we realize this is a great way to promote baseball in the Inland Empire while exposing kids to a college campus and what it will take to succeed at the next level.”

In the past, the SBVC baseball team has traveled to the kickoff ceremonies for the Del Rosa Little League and held a clinic there for players. But, after the coaches connected and determined that the Little Leaguers were off school and available, the opportunity to get them on a college campus and see what baseball is like on the next level was coordinated.

The Glendale game was the last home game of the fall training season and Coach Bill Mierzwik reports that after nearly 120 players tried out for the team starting earlier this Fall with final cuts now right around the corner. In his 19th season, Mierzwik’s Wolverines will attempt to improve on their 24-20 record from the 2008 season.

Former SBVC athletic equipment manager Jimmy Paulson left indelible mark on everyone
October 14, 2008

The following is from an e-mail from SBVC President Debra Daniels:

James (Jimmy) R. Paulson died on 13 October 2008 at age 69. Jimmy, as he was affectionately known, was born on 22 December 1938 to his late parents Melvin and Kathryn Paulson. He was a resident for the past 56 years, where he attended (Class of 1956) and (Class of 1959. While at SBVC he served as student manager for the college’s baseball and wrestling teams. After a sojourn in business, Jimmy was offered the position of athletic equipment manager by Sylvester “Babe” Heinberg, the chair of the physical education division and coordinator of athletics. Happily, Jimmy accepted the offer and served in that position with distinction from 1962 until his retirement in 1997, at which point he was inducted into the SBVC Hall of Fame.

Jimmy was highly respected by his peers and associates as a competent and resourceful equipment manager with nearly magical skills in stretching modest budgets to provide SBVC’s athletic teams with quality equipment. He was the go-to-guy for administrators, athletes and coaches when something needed doing in his province. During 35 years as athletic equipment manager, Jimmy worked with 45 head coaches, 6 athletic trainers, 5 athletic directors, 5 physical education division chairs, numerous physical education teachers, and over 10,000 athletes, including 134 who played professionally, 12 who qualified for the Olympics, and a very large number who became coaches and teachers. Blessed with a remarkable memory, Jimmy was a living library of information and lore about the administrators, athletes, coaches, teachers, trainers, and teams that have been part of his life at and to whom he has contributed so much.

Jimmy is survived by his sister, Margaret “Sue” Noerr (nee Paulson), nephew, Chris Casdin and wife Jessica, niece, Mary-Kathryn Haddad and husband Michael, and great-nephews, Aidan Casdin and Kieran Haddad, and great-niece, Abby Casdin. They live in the , area.

The public viewing will be at Bobbitt Memorial Chapel, on Thursday, October 16, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., and the funeral will be on Friday, October 17 at 10 a.m. For questions regarding the viewing or funeral, please contact Bobbitt Memorial at 909.882.3761.

“Sarahi is being nominated for two reasons; first her performance on the soccer field and second because of her great attitude and work ethic.

On the field, Sarahi, leads the SBVC team with 10 goals and 2 assists in just 11 games. Her creativity, vision, flair, athleticism and technical ability are a lethal combination and more great things are to come from this freshman.

More impressive than her ability are her personal and athletic characteristics. Sarahi works hard in every area of her life, school, on the field, etc. She is dedicated, humble, un-selfish and works to improve every moment. She is not afraid of hard work, is a leader and makes her teammates better players.

Brewer named SBVC’s new Men’s Basketball head coach
June 26, 2008

Quincy Brewer has joined San Bernardino Valley College as the new head coach for the SBVC Men’s Basketball team. Brewer spent last season as the San Bernardino Valley College men’s basketball assistant coach to Gerry Wright.

A native of Riverside, California, Brewer graduated from J.W. North High School in Riverside. While at North, he led the Huskies to a pair of appearances in the CIF finals and was named the “second best basketball player on the West Coast” by the Long Beach Press-Telegram. His high school honors include being named to the California all-state team his junior and senior year, in addition to being named as an honorable mention to the McDonalds All-American team.

Brewer went on to play PAC-10 men’s basketball at Arizona State University in Tempe, where he was a three-year starter for the Sun Devils. After college, he played professionally in six different countries (Mexico, Taiwan, Finland, Russia, Germany, and South Korea), winning one league scoring title and one championship.

After receiving his MA in Education from the University of Phoenix and his MA in Physical Education from Azusa Pacific University, Brewer assumed the roll of head men’s basketball coach at Ramona High School in Riverside from 2004-2007. Before Brewer’s arrival at Riverside Ramona, the boy’s basketball program was in a shambles, with the 03-04 team going 2-23. The following year the Rams were in the playoffs and Brewer was named the 2004 L.A. Times and Riverside County Coach of the Year. During his three years at Ramona, Brewer guided the Rams to three straight playoff appearances, leading to an overall mark of 71-16, multiple top 10 state wide rankings, and a pair of Sunkist League titles, with his 2005-2006 Rams team posting a school best 28-1 record.

Asked his intentions for the Wolverines as they open their season in November, Brewer says he’s excited “to bring back the championship style of men’s basketball that San Bernardino Valley College is accustomed to,” and hopes to continue the team’s heightened level of excellence. Brewer contends that his most difficult challenge will be, “keeping student athletes on track academically, which is the key to success on and off the court.”

David Rubio, director of SBVC athletics, says the San Bernardino Valley College interview panel was taken with Brewer’s passion for men’s basketball, and his knowledge of the sport. “Quincy’s enthusiasm and eagerness to get started really gave me a good feeling about his perspective on how he wants to run a disciplined program,” Rubio says. “Quincy brings San Bernardino Valley College a great deal of energy and experience to the men’s basketball program.”

In addition to coaching at San Bernardino Valley College, Brewer runs the NextLevel basketball training company. He and his wife, Berenice, live in Riverside and have three kids: Kenneth, Andrea and Brianna.

Valley answered back with a solo home run by freshman center fielder Alec Cortez (Riverside Poly) in the bottom of the sixth and a run in the bottom on the eighth, to make the score 7-8. The Coyotes scored an additional run in the top of the ninth and were up two runs, 7-9. Setting up a fantastic finish that no one expected, with Cerro Coso's ace closer on the mound to finish the game, the San Bernardino bats came alive as they scored three runs to win the game.

This is how it happened: freshman designated hitter Adrian Carmona (Rubidoux) was hit by a pitch, sophomore catcher Zach Baker (Rancho Cucamonga) singled to left field as Carmona advanced to second. Freshman right fielder Alex Aunchman singled and Carmona scored, the score is now 8-9. Then freshman left fielder Sam Lewis (Riverside North) singled to left field, and freshman pinch runner Mike Santos (Rubidoux) scored. With the game tied at 9, Cortez struck out swinging. Then freshman shortstop Dustin Williams (Rubidoux)  singled to center field, scoring Aunchman, and winning the game.

Williams went 4 for 5 with 2 RBI's, Cortez went 3 for 5 with 3 runs scored, and Baker went 2 for 4 in the first game. Sophomore right hand pitcher Teddy Martinez (Los Altos) went the distance, pitching a complete game, 14 hitter, and improving his record to 6-5 on the season.

In the second game, since it was the last game of the season for both teams, the Coyotes head coach had a goal of getting as many sophomores in the game as possible. In the bottom of the third, Vasquez hit a solo home run to tie up the game. With Valley and Cerro Coso tied at three going into the bottom of the fourth the offensive flood gates opened as San Bernardino scored seven runs in that inning alone.

Williams hit a three run home run to deep left and five batters later Carmona powered a deep three run home run to left. The Coyotes answered back with two runs in the top of the fifth but would get no closer as San Bernardino closed out the 2008 season with a pair of wins.

Williams went 2 for 3 with 5 RBI's, Cortez went 2 for 2 with 2 runs scored, and first baseman Sam Konnoff (San Bernardino Pacific) went 3 for 4 in the second game. Sophomore right hand pitcher Tommy Bills (Perris) went five innings, scattering 7 hits, and improving his record to 8-2 on the season.

Football: Wolverines finally get a rematch with Riverside for the “Bell” game
February 19, 2008

After a six year departure, the “Bell” game is back, Saturday, September 13, Riverside City College and San Bernardino Valley College will meet up for the 69th time. The game will be played in San Bernardino.

“It’s reviving a great tradition,” said Athletic Director David Rubio, “It is a shame that it has not been an annual event. I am glad we are bringing the game back, with two cross county rivals and both institutions having a great athletic history, there is no reason why this game should wait another year, let alone six.”

The Riverside City Tigers are currently in possession of the “Bell” trophy and are looking to retain the title for a fourth time in 12 years. The last time the Tigers and Wolverines met was on September 14, 2002 in San Bernardino, where Riverside won 27-17.  The last time the Wolverines won the “Bell” was in 1996, with a score of 32-20.

The “Bell” is five feet tall and is approximately 350 pounds; it is hung inside of a wooden frame as to give the winning team the ability to ring the bell after the game. Due to the immense size and weight of the bell, it is transported on a small trailer designed specifically to carry the bell around by a vehicle.

Riverside City has a 35-32-1 edge on San Bernardino Valley and the Wolverines have a 19-13 record at home for the series, which began in 1926.

“It’s a long time rivalry,” said Valley head coach Pat Meech, “Not only is it a trophy game, the game even goes beyond pride, it’s fun, it’s about bragging rights, and it’s great for the local communities.”

Coach Meech was an assistant coach at Riverside the last time these two teams met.

The 2008 Football schedule is as follows:

09-06    @ Palm Desert College of the Desert
09-13         Riverside City College
09-20         Mission Viejo Saddleback
09-27    @ Victorville Victor Valley*

Women win 14th Straight, set school record for consecutive wins
February 18, 2008

The Women won against some stiff competition as the Rio Hondo Roadrunners (15-14 5-9) gave the Wolverines (25-5 14-1) all they could handle before pulling away, 81-70.

The last time the Wolverines lost a game was against Antelope Valley on January 5, since then Valley College has rattled off an amazing 14 straight wins, leaping over a pervious record set in 1997 of 11 straight wins.

Monday was not only President's Day, but the last women's home game of the regular season, and the sophomores were honored before game time. That list includes: Jasmine Marshall (San Bernardino Arroyo Valley), Shy Walter (Perris), Simeone Baker (29 Palms), Sylvia Roland (Rialto), LaQuita Jordan (Riverside J.W. North), and Ronisha Edwards (Riverside La Sierra).

The closest the Roadrunners would come to staying close with the best defense in California is an 8-7 lead with 15:09 left in the first half. The largest margin of difference when the Wolverines led by 22 twice. The first time with 0:41 left in the first half, 48-26, then the second time with 14:56 left in the game, 56-34. Even though the Roadrunners would not relent and fold, the swarming Wolverines defense was too much for them to overcome.

Five Wolverines scored in double figures in the win. Sophomore forward Walter had 12 points, sophomore forward Roland had 10 points, sophomore guard Jordan had 11 points, freshman guard Dwayanna Pullum (Riverside J.W. North) had 10 points, and freshman guard Ashley Gray (Riverside J.W. North) had 10 points. Gray went 4-4 with two huge three point shots.

The Roadrunners were led by freshman forward Amanda Ragains (El Monte Arroyo) with 17 points and sophomore guard Elena Agabao (Montebello Schurr) with 15 points. Agabao scored all her points from beyond the three point line, going 5-9 from beyond the arc.

Women's and Men's basketball hammers Barstow
February 16, 2008

The Wolverines hit the gas and didn't let off as both the Women's (24-5 13-1) and Men's (13-13 8-4) basketball teams left the Barstow Vikings in the dust in Foothill Conference play.

As the second half began the Wolverines kicked their game up a huge notch pouring on 52 points. Once the Wolverines found their rhythm they never let off as they went up by 30 points with 11:15 remaining in the game and were up by 41 with 9:22 remaining. The number one ranked defense in the state proved it by continuing to stop the Viking offense while making the right baskets on the other side, with 1:34 remaining in the game the Wolverines were up by 49 points, 89-40. The Wolverines were led by sophomore forward Ronisha Edwards (Riverside La Sierra) with 18 points, followed by sophomore forward Shy Walter with 12 points, sophomore guard Jasmine Marshall (San Bernardino Arroyo Valley) with 11, freshman guard Ashleigh Frazier (REV) with 11, and sophomore forward Simeone Baker with 10 points. In the men's game, the Wolverines won 76-52. The Wolverines dominated the first half, allowing only 17 points and going into halftime leading by 30, 47-17. The Vikings (4-22 2-9) were relentless, more than doubling their entire point total in the second half by scoring 35 points, but the Wolverines would not let Barstow back in the game and still won by 24. The Wolverines started the game on a 19-2 run, getting up as high as by 32 with 1:04 remaining in the first half on a three pointer by freshman guard Netsanet Hailu (Riverside Poly). The Wolverines were up by 32 again early in the second half on a jumper by sophomore guard Johnny Barnes (Astoria, NY Bryant), 55-23. The leading scorers for the Wolverines were sophomore forward Lewis Leonard (Philadelphia Frankford) with 17 points, sophomore guard Bo Harrison (REV) with 17 points, and Barnes with 15 points.

San Bernardino Valley College Baseball team saves woman from dog mauling
January 31, 2008

Six San Bernardino Valley College baseball players saved the life of a local woman being mauled by two pit bulls last Wednesday, only to be in danger themselves moments later.

At 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 23, the entire baseball team was working on a team defensive drill; Wolverines head coach Bill Mierzwik recalls it this way. “I was standing near home plate, running a bunt defense drill, and then noticed six of my players in left field jump the 9 foot fence in left field. I was concerned, I was wondering what was going on?”

What coach Mierzwik noticed was six of his players running to the rescue of a woman being mauled by two pit bulls near the corner of College Drive and South K Street, in San Bernardino, which is across the street from the baseball field.

Freshman third baseman James Frederick commented, “I was standing at third base and someone yelled out to look behind me, and from where I was standing it looked like the lady was holding the dogs with a leash, but as I took a closer look, she was actually holding out her purse to block the pit bulls. I dropped my glove, and grabbed a stick on my way over the fence so I could do something to help the lady.”

Coach Mierzwik said, “Once those guys got to her, they threw their gloves and did everything they could to get those dogs off of the lady.” The Spanish speaking lady was described as in her late 50’s and approximately 110 pounds.

The dogs left and the players started attending to the lady, who was in shock and crying. Freshman catcher Adrian Carmona was speaking to the lady in Spanish to calm her down. The pit bulls moved north on K Street, toward a young child walking in the direction of the dogs. “When I saw those dogs moving toward that kid, knowing that my teammates were with the lady, I picked up my stick again and moved those dogs along, passed the kid, until they turned right onto Esperanza Street, and out of sight,” said Frederick.

Then the players on the baseball field noticed the pit bulls returning toward their teammates. The players that were attending to the lady took off their shoes to defend themselves, throwing their shoes and gloves at the dogs as they rapidly approached.

By the time of the second attack, Valley College police officer Blake Bonnett was at the scene, on his second day on the job. Eventually, with the help of officer Bonnett and the baseball players on the scene working together, they were able to fend off a second attack by the pit bulls.

Valley College Police arrived moments later and assisted those on site, and helped San Bernardino City Animal Control to locate and apprehend the attackers.

“By the time Valley College Police showed up they took hold of the situation and let us go back to practice,” said Frederick, “When we got back to the field, the coaches let us and the team take a moment to gather ourselves, it was quite a scene for those who stayed on the field too.”

“My baseball players didn’t hesitate,” coach Mierzwik talking about the six, “They just acted, a person was in dire need and they were there, which shows a great deal of character. They had no regard for their own personal safety, that’s good bunch of guys to have on a team.” Two days later the Wolverines split an afternoon-evening double header, winning the first game 15-8.

The players who defended our local community neighbor woman are, freshman third baseman James Frederick (Rialto), freshman outfielder Garland Norton (Moreno Valley Vista del Lago), freshman catcher Adrian Carmona (Rubidoux), freshman catcher Troy Matcham (Bloomington), freshman utility-man Mike Flores (Riverside J.W. North), and sophomore right-handed-pitcher Dominick Guerrero (Fontana Kaiser).

The next home game for the entire Wolverines baseball team will be on Thursday, February 7, at 6 p.m. at Fiscalini Field in San Bernardino.
